In Downtown, wood framing is now complete for a new affordable and supportive housing complex at the former site of the Umeya Rice Cake Company, according to new social media posts from Morley Builders.

The project from Little Tokyo Service Center, located at 412-426 S. Crocker Street, is named The Umeya for the site's former occupant. The new seven-story building will feature 175 apartments studio, one-, and two-bedroom unit apartments when complete.

The fully affordable housing development will cater to renters at the low-, very low-, and extremely low-income households. Half of its apartments would be permanent supportive housing, offering wraparound services to formerly unhoused residents.

FSY Architects is designing The Umeya, which has a V-shaped footprint and space for two courtyards at street level. Plans also call for 13,000 square feet of ground floor space dedicated to community uses, retail, and service providers. A new mural by Skid Row artist Showzart will adorn the wall of the apartment complex.

Completion is on track to occur in 2025.

The project is among a handful of new affordable housing developments from LTSC now in the construction stage, joining projects above Metro's Vermont/Santa Monica Station in East Hollywood and at 823 Cleveland Street in Chinatown. LTSC is also building a mixed-use project just north of the Japanese American National Museum.
