At its July 2 meeting, the Los Angeles City Council voted to adopt the findings of an environmental study conducted for a proposed multifamily residential development near Sunset Gower Studios in Hollywood, rejecting an appeal which sought to halt the project.
California Landmark Group, the applicant behind the proposed project at 1201 N. Gower Street, intends to raze 28 existing apartments to enable the construction of a new eight-story building featuring 108 one-, two-, and three-bedroom homes above parking for 99 vehicles.
Project entitlements already considered by the City Planning Commission include density bonus incentives to permit a larger development than normally allowed by zoning rules. In exchange, 16 of the proposed apartments would be set aside for rent as very low-income affordable housing, and an additional two units of low-income replacement housing would be provided to account for the existing building.

After permits are issued, construction is expected to occur over a roughly 28-month period.
The project appeal came from the Supporters Alliance for Environmental Responsibility (SAFER), an affiliate of LIUNA, which often challenges new developments in the City of Los Angeles. SAFER had argued that the project's environmental study had failed to capture potential impacts of construction, and argued that entitlements had been improperly granted. A staff report recommended denial.
The proposed apartment complex is one of several new housing developments in the works near Sunset Gower Studios, including a 169-unit development planned for to the south across Lexington Avenue.
