Steps from the Baldwin Park Metrolink station, Retirement Housing Foundation has completed work on its latest senior affordable housing complex.
Central Metro Place, which broke ground in 2024 at 14513 Central Avenue, consists of a four-story building featuring 54 apartments for residents aged 62 and above, as well as one apartment for on-site staff. The $24.4-million development also includes community spaces, an exercise room, and laundry facilities on the ground floor.
“Central Metro Place brings quality, affordable housing to Baldwin Park, helping address this critical need in the region. It shows what’s possible when a city, its partners, and a mission-driven nonprofit come together to help older adults thrive,” said RHF president and chief executive officer Stuart Hartman in a news release. “Our residents have quality homes they can afford, on-site supportive services, and access to Metrolink and community resources within walking distance. We are proud to welcome them home.”
Birbagroup Architects designed the contemporary low-rise structure, while Walton Construction served as general contractor.
The project opens at a time when Los Angeles County's population of older adults is on the rise, with more than 2.3 million persons aged 65 older expected by the year 2040. Many such seniors find themselves rent burdened, with over half paying more than 30 percent of their income toward housing according to a 2023 study by Harvard's Joint Center for Housing Studies.
Central Metro Place is the second affordable housing development recently developed nearby in Baldwin Park. A short walk to the north at Ramona Boulevard, the Cesar Chavez Foundation built the 51-unit Esteban E. Torres Village on July 11.
