Last week, construction commenced for another affordable housing development near the Baldwin Park Metrolink station.

The latest project, Central Metro Place, is being developed by Retirement Housing Foundation on a site at 14513 Central Avenue. Plans call for a four-story building featuring 54 apartments for residents aged 62 and above, as well as one apartment for on-site staff.

In addition to housing, other features of the development will include offices for staff, a gym, a laundry facility, an arts and craft room, a courtyard, a community room, and on-site social services for residents. Raised planter boxes at the rear of the site will allow residents to grow flowers and vegetables.

Birbagroup Architects is designing the contemporary low-rise structure, while Walton Construction is serving as general contractor.

The project has received funding through the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the City of Baldwin Park, Wells Fargo, and Citi Community Capital.

Central Metro Place is the second affordable housing development to break ground this month in Baldwin Park. A short walk to the north at Ramona Boulevard, the Cesar Chavez Foundation started work on the 51-unit Esteban E. Torres Village on July 11.
