A July 19 ceremony with officials from developer Meta Housing Corp. and the City of Long Beach marked the start of construction of a new affordable housing complex at 1400 Long Beach Boulevard.
The project, which will be located along the east side of Long Beach Boulevard at its intersection with 14th Street, calls for the construction of a new six-story building featuring 163 one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments as well as amenities such as a community room, an outdoor courtyard, and a children's play area.
“We are thrilled to begin construction for this exciting project in Midtown,” said Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson in a news release. “It carries on our commitment to prioritizing affordable housing options for our community, as we continue to produce affordable housing at record levels. And because of this great project, 163 Central Long Beach families will have stability and better opportunities to thrive.”
Longbeachize reports that The Architects Collective is designing the contemporary low-rise building. KPRS is serving as contractor.
The project is expected to cost approximately $87.6 million and will cater to households earning between 30 and 70 percent of the area median income level when completed.
Move-ins at 1400 Long Beach are expected in mid-2026.
Los Angeles-based Meta Housing Corp. has developed dozens of affordable housing developments across Southern California, including a similar 194-unit complex at 2400 Long Beach Boulevard.
The project site was previously slated for a smaller market-rate development which would have featured just 65 residential units above commercial space.
