An empty lot across the street from Ted Watkins Park in Watts is slated to become affordable rental housing, according to a notice issued recently by the Los Angeles Housing Department.

The Gateway Place project, led by Grant Housing and Economic Development Corporation, would rise from a site at 10304-10312 S. Central Avenue. Plans call for the construction of a six-story building featuring 134 one- and two-bedroom apartments above 2,182 square feet of commercial space. In addition to housing, the project would incorporate common features such as a lobby, a recreation room, offices, a courtyard, an amenity deck, and laundry facilities.

The apartments at Gateway Place are expected to serve veterans.

It was reported in 2023 that other members of the project team will include co-developer Logos Faith Development and architecture firm Gensler.

Another affordable housing complex, Linc Housing's Cadence apartments, debuted in 2022 not far south along Central Avenue.
