New state funding will jump start the construction of new housing and a town center at the sprawling north campus of the West Los Angeles VA complex.

The Veterans Collective - a partnership between Century Housing Corp., Thomas Safran & Associates, and U.S. Vets - announced yesterday that it has secured $105 million in new tax-exempt bond financing from the State of California, as well as low-income housing tax credits. The funding will go toward the construction of 250 additional homes at the north campus, as well as the construction of a long-desired Town Center.

“Our commitment to Veterans is steadfast. The recently announced financing helps ensure that the Veterans Collective will be able to continue delivering housing, community, and critical services to Veterans at the West LA VA,” said Parisa Roshan of Thomas Safran & Associates.

The Veterans Collective is developing more than 1,200 units of affordable housing for veterans and their families at the campus, which may eventually be home to as many as 3,000 total residents. Funding for Buildings 256, 408, and 409 will add to 325 units currently under construction, and more than 450 homes already completed, per Paige O'Donnell of Century Housing.

More than $1 billion in public and private funds have been dedicated to the redevelopment of the north campus, and more will likely be needed to house the approximately 3,000 homeless veterans who live in Los Angeles County.

While a federal judge ruled last year that the VA should be required to accommodate at least 2,500 additional homes on its campus, which sits near the future terminus of Metro's D Line subway, an appeals panel seems poised to block that order.
