At the intersection of Vermont and Manchester Avenues in South Los Angeles, the wrapping is off for Evermont, a new affordable housing complex from Bridge Housing Corporation.
The project, built on a site at 8500 S. Vermont Avenue that had been vacant for decades, includes 180 apartments in a pair of podium- type buildings. The first, Luminus@Evermont, features 118 one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments that will be reserved for households earning between 30 and 80 percent of the Los Angeles area median income. The second, Vista@Evermont, features 62 one-bedroom dwellings set aside for older adults earning up to 30 percent of the area median income level.
TCA Architects designed the two six-story structures.
The two apartments buildings are components of the Los Angeles County-led Vermont Manchester development, which finally brought development to a site that had been vacant since the 1992 riots. The housing will be accompanied by a new central plaza activated by ground-floor retail space and a 40,000-square-foot Target, as well as the public boarding school SEED LA, which includes 170 dorm rooms, 20 staff apartments, classrooms, a gymnasium, a dining hall, outdoor recreation space, courtyards and a rooftop garden, among other offerings. Metro is partnering on the school, which will have a STEM focus and serve grades 9 through 12.
Other members of the project team include the Coalition for Responsible Community Development, Primestor, and Suffolk.
San Francisco-based Bridge Housing's other recent Los Angeles-area projects include new affordable developments in Long Beach, Koreatown, and Pasadena, as well as the revamp of the Jordan Downs complex in Watts.
