The past decade transformed the surroundings of La Cienega/Jefferson Station with high-rise housing and office buildings. Now, a comparatively modest project is taking a step forward near the elevated Metro stop.

On February 13, the Los Angeles City Planning Commission voted to approve a proposal from applicant Kaveh Bral which would create new apartments on a currently vacant lot at 5785 W. Corbett Street. Plans call for the construction an eight-story building featuring 80 one- and two-bedroom apartments above on-site parking for 103 vehicles.

The Planning Commission signed off on density bonus incentives for the project, allowing for a larger building than would typically be permitted by zoning rules. In exchange, 11 of the new apartments are to be set aside for rent as affordable housing at the very low-income level.

Sam Ghanouni is designing 5785 W. Corbett Street, which is shown in a rendering as a contemporary low-rise structure. Plans indicate the building would include a central courtyard and a rooftop deck.

The project site is located west across the street from Habitat, an under-construction development from LendLease that will include housing, offices, and retail on a site previously occupied by a Public Storage facility.
