A shuttered school campus in Azusa is to be redeveloped with housing, according to a notice distributed by the city.
The project from Arizona-based homebuilder Taylor Morrison, named Delaney Square, would rise from a property located at 1035 E. Mauna Loa Avenue - formerly W. R. Powell Elementary. Plans call for the construction of 128 new residential units in a mix of detached two-story homes, as well as two-story duplexes and triplexes.
All existing structures associated with the former elementary school are to be demolished. Besides housing, the project would also involve the construction of a central paseo, landscaping, and electric vehicle charging facilities, according to the notice.
Due to existing land use regulations, construction of housing at the school site will require approval of a general plan amendment and a zone change.
Other Taylor Morrison projects in the L.A. area include new homes in Playa Vista and in San Pedro.
The project is part of a recent trend of housing replacing public school campuses which close due to declining enrollment. Pasadena and Duarte have considered similar developments.
