An empty lot located next to Metro right-of-way in Jefferson Park is being pitched as an opportunity site for public open space by 10th District City Councilmember Heather Hutt.
The property, located at 2827 Exposition Place, is owned by Metro and was acquired along with an adjacent site in 2007 for use in the construction and operation of the abutting E Line. The property is just over 4,500 square feet in size.
In a motion introduced on July 30, Hutt requests that the Department of Recreation and Parks work with the Bureau of Engineering and Metro to generate a report back on the feasibility of developing a park on the property. The item has been referred to the Arts, Parks, Libraries, and Community Enrichment Committee for consideration.
The 2827 Exposition Place site abuts the Expo Walk townhomes, developed by Olson Homes, and sits south across the Metro right-of-way and Exposition Boulevard from a series of office developments built by the Luzzatto Company.
Not far away in Leimert Park, a second motion introduced by Hutt on August 1 looks to build additional park space through the expansion of an existing plaza just north of Obama Boulevard. Degnan Plaza - a median created by the intersection of Norton Avenue, Degnan boulevard, and Edgehill Drive - would be enlarged by the closure of adjacent street segments, in the concept put forth by Hutt. The second motion has also been referred to the Arts, Parks, Libraries, and Community Enrichment Committee.
Citing a recent update to the Trust for Public Land's ParkScore Index which ranked Los Angeles 90th out of the 100 largest cities in the United States, Hutt has lately attempted to look for new sites for open space in her district. In February, she filed a motion look to convert a hillside property once slated to become the headquarters of the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf into a park that might tie into the neighboring Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook and Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area. She followed up in June by proposing the closure of several short street segments in Leimert Park to create a neighborhood park.
