A new affordable housing development from Abode Communities is starting to take shape in the Chesterfield Square neighborhood.

The Carlton, which broke ground last year at 5407 S. Western Avenue, will consist of a four-story, 60-unit development with a mix of studio, one-, and two-bedroom apartments when finished.
Abode Communities used provisions of the Mayor's Executive Directive 1 to expedite approval of the project, which is on track for completion in January 2026.
Financing for the Carlton includes a combination of low-income housing tax credits with state and local sources.

Abode announced the groundbreaking of the Carlton simultaneously with that of a similar affordable housing complex now rising at 8909 S. Central Avenue. The developer is also working on housing projects in Westlake and Chatsworth.
