In October, the Long Beach Planning Commission signed off on a proposal from local developer Harbor Vista  which would bring micro-unit apartments to a site just east of the A Line.

The project, slated to replace a surface parking lot located at 421 E. 4th Street, calls for the construction of a seven-story edifice featuring 96 studio apartments - ranging from 325 to 505 square feet in size - above ground-floor parking for 17 vehicles.

According to a staff report, 12 of the new apartments are to be set aside for rent as affordable housing at the very low-income level.

CityFabrick is designing 421 E. 4th Street, which is portrayed in renderings as a contemporary podium-type building clad in painted cement plaster, fiber cement panels, and metal. Plans also show amenity decks at the second floor and rooftop levels.

The proposed development would rise on the north side of 4th Street between Linden and Elm Avenues, joining a handful of infill projects which have recently arrived on nearby properties.

A mixed-use building was completed in 2019 across the street and 4th and Linden, and Onni Group's East Village complex made its debut last year.
