Atwater Village was named for its location - adjacent to the meandering waterway known as the Los Angeles River. Situated between the cores of both Glendale and Los Angeles, it became a desirable residential neighborhood starting in the 1920s. A majority of its homes have never been demolished - it has the largest number of extant pre-1939 buildings in Los Angeles County.
